The 2023 BMW X5 is a midsize model that offers all of the allure the X3 presents. However, the X3 and the X5 crossovers stand notably apart in a few critical areas, and understanding these differences could help you make the right selection.
Performance
The 2023 BMW X3 has two powertrain systems available across its three trims. The first two trims draw 248 horsepower from a turbo four-cylinder, 2.0-liter engine. The top M40i trim is outfitted with a 382-horsepower, 3.0-liter, V6 engine with mild hybrid technology. These are both combined with an eight-speed auto transmission. The base trim has rear-wheel drive, and the top two trims have all-wheel drive. Three engine options are available for the X5. The options begin with a 335-horsepower, turbo 3.0-liter, V6 engine, which features an eight-speed auto transmission. A turbo V6 PHEV is also available, putting out 389 combined horsepower. The top X5 trim is outfitted with a 523-horsepower, turbo 4.4-liter, V8 system. This trim comes with a sport-tuned adaptive suspension and a sport exhaust system.
Appearance
The BMW X3 has a regal, confident presence on the road. It displays long, crisp accents on the sides with a gentle arch through the roof. The X3’s nose has a well-defined hood, scalloped LED lights, and a bar-style grille with the classic BMW kidney shape. The 2023 X5 is equally sophisticated throughout its façade. Its sides are slightly smoother than the X3’s sides, and the rear wheel fenders are boldly molded. The hood is longer, and it trends toward the same kidney-shaped grille. The headlights stand out with their scooped design and upper LED light bar.
Features
Many shared features are found across the models at various trim levels. Both models, for example, are available with remote engine start, leather upholstery, a Harman Kardon audio system, a wireless charging pad, a surround-view camera, parking assistance, smart device app connections, a head-up display, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, a navigation system, a wireless internet hotspot and more. A few additional features are only available with the X5, including massaging front seats, emergency stop assist, a four-zone climate management system, LED lighting in the panoramic sunroof, and others.
